I need some help, my cruise control has stopped working and all the repair books I look in say to take it to the dealer. I have a 1993 F 150 XLT it has the electric cruise control and I have checked the fuses. I measured power on the two wires that are supposed to be power and both have power , but one has about 5 volts. This is the one that is fed from the brake switch is this right? or do I have something wrong before it gets to the control box?
Are you sure the problem is electrical? I only ask this because my cruise quit and the only thing wrong was the throttle control cable had vibrated off of it's mount at the throttle.
I had the cables all apart and checked them, just to make sure it wasn't something stupid like that or a broken cable. all cables are there and seem to be in working order. It seems like there is no power, but I don't know if it is power or in the module. There doesn't seem to be much info on it anywhere. I even went to a friend who has access to the repair CDs from Snap-on and there is no info on repairing it. I am stumped on this one but won't give up till its fixed. I am going to have to comb the junk yards to find one and take pieces off and try them until I find the culprit.
Found someone who has the same cruise control as me and is willing to let me try parts until I figure this out. I would still like to know how to trouble shot the cruise control system though without replacing parts.
Maybe look at the cruise control deactivator switch. On my 96 it is a small red thing located on the front of the master cylinder. I've heard of brake fluid getting into the seal of this.
I had luck with repairing non operational Cruise on 95 F150 by opening servo unit on firewall - found moisture had entered sealed housing and bound up moving parts. Do this as last resort as switches etc can put it out also and are a lot easier to get to. Be careful if you go into the servo - it has some delicate parts and may just need freeing up or a small amount of lube/cleaning. I did have factory manual and it said to go to dealer for servo problems but I figured if I had to replace it I might as well look in it. Good luck!
Thanks for the input everyone, it turned out to be the deactivation switch. What exactly does this do anyway? I jumped across the wires and the cruise control worked, it did everything it was supposed to do including shutting off when I touched the brake pedal.
According to 1995 Elec./Vac. troubleshooting manual, switch on master cylinder is a redundant safety device wired from 12V pwr to the PCU to shut off cruise with increased brake pressure (5-10 lbs); switch opens with pressure and shuts down cruise if brake pedal switch fails - Sorry to take so long to look this up.
Hope this helps and I learned something also.
Well, That certainly explains why everything worked as normal when the switch was bypassed. Thanks for looking it up and now I know something new about these systems.
