HIGH oil pressure?

Need some help with what appears to be an unusual problem as I can't find any discussion on this problem anywhere in the forums. I have an old 1986 F-250 460 V-8 work truck I use on my ranch. Its got 220 K miles on it and I want to be using it when it turns over 500K (hence my handle). Here is the situation. When I start it up (starts easy) for the first 3-5 minutes the oil pressure is pegged on the high end of the guage! It does this even in warm/hot weather and everytime I start it, not just first thing in the morning. I see some discussion on here about the Ford oil pressure guages being inaccurate so I'd be inclined to ignore the guage except for the oil puddles on the shop floor, caked on the block, absorbed into the air filter, etc., seems to indicate there is some oil under pressure going where it shouldn't.

What do you experienced guys think?

The bypass spring may be stuck. Check it with a mechanical guage to make sure you don't have a flaky sender or guage.

Thanks Brad. I forgot to add to my original message that the oil pressure comes down after 3-5 minutes to the mid point on the guage. If the bypass was stuck would the pressure stay high?

It might slowly loosen as the engine runs, or as the temp comes up and cause everthing to expand. I'd check with a manual guage first to make sure you don't have a screwy guage or sender. Senders are cheap, easy to get, and easier to replace, so you might go ahead and do that first.

460's run 80psi oil pressure when cold. A small block is only about 60psi. I would say you are ok.
