What causes "streaks" after waxing?

I polished and waxed my black F150 this past weekend. Today I noticed that when you look at it at an angle in direct sunlight it is covered in streaks, like you see on glass that isnt cleaned well. I know these streaks werent there before the job so what's causing it and what can I do to fix it?

thanks,
shane

Probably just didn't get all the wax off. Wash it and then give is another wipe down with clean cotton terry cloths.

make sure your terry cloth rags are really clean. You may have picked up a bit of crud while barely touching a bumper or wheelwell and the dirt smeared the wax job. Rewashing and wiping down with fresh rags ought to help a lot. Also, when washing rags, never use any kind of fabric softener.

I had excellant results using these products. Remember do not wash and wax black truck in direct sunlight. Find shade.

1. Wash and Dry Truck CALIFORNIA GOLD CAR WASH
2. Mothers Reflections Premium Polish (I like this better than the prewax cleaner)
3. CALIFORNIA GOLD SEALER AND GLAZE – PHASE 2 (I usually satisfied with the results after the use of this product and do not go to step 4)
4. CALIFORNIA GOLDNATURAL FORMULA
PURE CARNAUBA WAX – PHASE 3

I use clean microfiber towels to remove the polish and wax.

In addition to the other suggestions, a very humid day can also cause this. I've had it take overnight before it cured well enough to remove properly.

a very humid day can also cause this.

I live in Alabama...every day is a very humid day

Going to give it a wash and a good rub down tonight or tomorrow night. Thinking about getting a soft buff pad and lightly going over it with a buffer. Think thats a bad idea?

thanks for the advice,
shane

I think waxing in the hot sun causes this more than anything, next to that would be high humidy..Give it time , making sure it is fully dry...Drink a couple of beers while ur waiting, makes the time go quicker..

We often have a problem with new black paint and streaking here at the dealership. It should go away after a few washings. I'll be darned if I can tell you what causes it, though.

Streaking

I had a black Mercury Marauder for 2 years before getting my white F-150, and will never have another black vehicle. The car never looked good in direct sun light, but looked great otherwise. Always saw streaks no matter what I did. This white truck has the best looking paint on it that I've ever seen from the factory. Perfectly smooth, even on the bed, and tailgate. It also cleans up easily, and looks good all the time. Good luck, I think you have a tough road ahead of you trying to keep it looking as good as you want it to look. Before the lemon law got rid of my Mercury I was ready to surrender.

yep, im getting a white f150 in the next few days. with a white vehicle or even silver, you dont have to deal with swrils, streaks, light scratches, etc.... black looks nice but is a PITA to maintain..

best of luck though!

Use Meguires instant detailer. It's a spray bottle. Spray it on wipe it off. The streaks will dissappear, and the finish will look great. I use the detailer after every wash. The premis is the truck has to have a coat of wax on it, for the detailer to work correctly.

Well here's a dumb question: How do you know if your truck already has a coat of wax on it? I bought it new about a month ago and I've only washed it a couple times, never waxed, yet the water beads up nicely on the paint. This leads me to believe that maybe the dealer waxed it? Is that normal, or does it come waxed from the factory (yeah, right...)? Thanks.

Well I know my dealer detailed mine! Yes with wax. But I waxed it once after myself. So if in doubt wax it yourself!

I second that. If you only want to wax a couple of times a year, use Meguiar's NXT or Zaino. After washing or a couple of days after, use a quick detailer to clean up the dust and return the shine.
