Just recently drove home from work, reached over to turn the fan/blower speed up and accidentally turn the 4 wheel drive ****. I know, how stupid could I be. In my defense Ford made the mistake of locating both of them close together not to mention they look and feel similar.
Anyways, I realized immediatley what I had done and switched it back. But not before I heard a clunk which is considered normal when switching in and out of 4 wheel drive, right? I think that I only switched it over to 4-hi. This all happened probably within 5 seconds, on/off. Going about 25 mph on dry pavement.
My question: Did I damage something/transfer case or is it ok? Everything seems normal to me. Is the loud clunk normal if shifting into 4-hi? Sorry about the dumb questions.
When you accellerate or decellerate while shifting the **** it can make a slight clunk. But it shouldn't have the "loud" clunk you are describing, especially at 25 mph.
I had my left front hub worked on when the truck had less than 1K miles on it. I'd have to look at my work order to see what they repaired, but the problem started with a louder than normal clunk when shifting. You might want to mention it to the shop.
The clunk is normal you didnt hurt a thing. If you were going to fast the 4x4 would not engage. They claim you can shift into 4x4 up to 60 mph, I dont recomend this. If you are moving, the truck will not go into 4x4 low. You have to be stopped in neutral with your foot on the brake pedal for it to shift into 4x4 low. So no worries. Drive it, enjoy it.
