Running Rich

Well, I'll just get to the question.

So you know, the truck in question is a 1986 F-150 with a 300 I6(obviously) and the Feedback carb (I'll reserve my opinions of this marvel of ingenuity)

Well, the problem is that the thing is running rich (puff of black smoke at startup, and the lovely smell of semi-burned $1.80 gasoline). Now, this wouldn't generally be a problem if this carburetor made any sense at all (in other words...i can't figure out what in the world to adjust to lean it out)...this is probably just due to my own lack of knowledge/skill in dealing with this lovely gem of a carb.

Ok...now...another little tidbit of information, when you grab the top of the carburetor and shake it pretty firmly, it feels like it's a little loose on the intake manifold. Is this normal? Could it be causing the rich mixture problem? And if it is, how would I go about tightening it, doesn't appear that there's any loose bolts around it.

Anyway, I'm sure this is a simple question, but any advice would be appreciated.

Ryan

I can pretty much guarantee you the power valve diaphragm is bad. The loose carb is common also but usually causes vacuum leak symptoms. Overhaul it, it will be fine.
