Coming home today, stopped at a convenience store for a gallon of milk. Northwest corner of MacArthur and Hydraulic for those who are familiar with Wichita. Parked the car, got out, and heard tires squealing behind me on the street so I looked. Turns out it was a small car, maybe a Mazda Protege, or something else very similar in size to my Tracer, pulling a single-axle flatbed trailer carrying a Chevy Cavalier without wheels. He was coming south on Hydraulic at a pretty good clip apparently, stoplight changed and he had to set it down. He didn't quite get stopped in time, ended up well into the intersection. The front end of the Mazda (or whatever) looked pretty light, I was kind of amazed he had enough weight on it to even get moving. Rear end was squatted down almost to the street. My Tracer and wife's Escort both have a tow rating of 1000 lbs and I'm guessing his car is about the same--he had to have been well over that. Just a reminder that it's not just trucks that are overloaded--if there had been a car in front of this guy, he'd have bought the rear half of it.
In my early 20's I once towed a friends old Jaguar to the paint shop for him using my '79 Mustang Cobra.
Learned right then and there that just because you can get something moving doesn't mean that you can turn it or stop it. I was never so glad to unhook something.
We Had A Truck And Trailer In Our Shop The Other Day. The Guy Had Been Towing Doubles, 29' Fifth Wheel And A 21' Boat Behind It. The Boat Had Got Whipping So Bad It Ripped The Frame Of The Fifth Wheel Away From The Chassis, So The Box Was Sitting Crooked On The Frame. The Boat Whipping Had Also Caused The Fifth Wheel To Whip So Bad That It Had Come Around And Hit Both Sides Of The Truck. Can You Imagine The Sight Of That Fifth Wheel And Boat Going Sideways Down The Road? Needless To Say The Truck, Trailer, And Boat Were All Totaled. Dumb Son Of A %$###@
