I have a 1997 Aerostar XLT Sport that I've owned since new, it has 55K miles and has never been in an accident. It still has the OEM tires, Michelin 215/70R14 tires mounted on the stock aluminum rims. Lately I've noticed a thrumming noise coming from the left rear when its loaded (7 passengers) and I make a right turn. Visually I can see where the LR tire has been rubbing on the inside of the fender well. Nothing is obviously loose but there are definite rub marks. Has something slipped or are the bushings wearing out or ?????
Thanks,
Crisco
As it only occurs while loaded, I would suspect a weak/broken coil spring at the left rear. Or, possibly a displaced component such as the coil pan or, trailing/locator arm.
Look under recalls/TSB's section of this website. This problem has been noted by Ford and the NHTSA. The bullitan unmber is 961013.
The NHTA # is SB048815 05/96. The following is a cut and paste from their site:
"LEFT REAR TIRE RUBS ON WHEELHOUSE INNER PANEL IN JOUNCE POSITION &/OR UNDER HEAVY LOADS OR RIGHT TURNS."
I don't know what they do to fix it, but they are aware of it.
