Differential question

Last weekend I changed the oil in the differential of the truck. It has 106,000 miles and I bought it with 89,000 miles and wanted to see what the oil looked like. (It looked like new.) It’s an 8.8 with 3.08 gears. I noticed an electrical connector at the top of the differential housing. Also noticed a gear inside the differential attached to the ring gear with several small teeth. Is this an electronic traction control I read about on http://www.powertrax.com/tractioninfo.html#electronic?

My guess would be an ABS tone ring.

The sensor in the top of the differential is the speed sensor, the toothed ring is the reluctor. The signal generated by this sensor is processed by the PSOM (speedometer) for a speed signal that is used by several computers on your truck (ABS, PCM, and any other system that needs a speed signal).

word...

I had to replace that once. If it's messed up, you'll be shifting hard on your tranny, your speedometer goes dead, and your ABS will act funny.
