I have a 400 with an MC2100 on top...rebuilt it not too long ago and it runs and starts great, cold or hot. Float height was dead on, and I use it as my daily driver and never have problems. However recently I let it sit for a week before starting it. It took it a bit to start this time, and as I got on the gas to pull out of the parking lot, the car was slow to move and had a cloud of smoke behind it. I didn't get a good look at the color; I only saw it in my rear view mirror.
Does this sound like the engine was flooding? I've heard of floats soaking up gasoline over time and sinking in the fuel bowl; is it possible? Or something else I haven't thought of? My first instinct was flooding, because of the hard starting and poor acceleration---but could it have just been burning oil through the guides?
In a matter of seconds the engine was doing fine again.
Sounds like flooding to me. At least it sounds like what mine does when it floods. Check the choke pull-down or pull-off (same thing). If it isn't working it could do that. Might be crud in the bowl interfering with the needle/seat. Choke might be set wrong. Float is possible, have to check it. I've been through every one of these and I'm still fighting it! Runs OK but rotten (8 mpg) mileage.
Choke spring and pulloff are dead on...this has never happened when it has only sat for a day or two. So normally in the morning it runs great...it seems it is only a time-induced problem.
I hope I don't have to wet-check a new float back and forth...
