It would be much easier to remove the starter first.
Not much room and impossible to see what you are doing in place.

I have never needed to change just the solenoid though. When the solenoid is acting up the starter is about dead also.

Thats what I thought

The starter is still working fine. One of the terminals on the solenoid is loose, I can tighten it up and in a day it is loose again. The nuts are tight, it's loose where it goes into the solenoid.

Thanks

I'm not sure but isnt the lug for the wires a stud and uses the jamb nut to tighten everything ? Loosen the nuts on the stud, try to finger tighten the stud into the solenoid and then the jamb nut and tighten everything to the jamb nut - carefully

if you have a real long extention,or a few short ones, the starter is not a big deal at all. put the socket on an extertion that reaches forward nearly to the frontaxle above the starter, between it and the block and remove the top bolt then remove the others.
On the way back in inatsll the center bolt finger tight, put some grease on the socket to hold the bolt and insert the top one again, then finish the job up. try it it's not that hard
good luck Phil
