Dragging pads?

I have fairly new pads and calipers on my truck. 94 F-350. The front left one seems to drag so that there is an audible squeal coming from it. I can apply the brakes lightly and it goes away but when I let off, it comes back. It's intermittent also. I try to use that brake quiet stuff in the spray can that seems to work for a little bit but then it returns (the noise). The last time I had them off to do the brake quiet, the backing plate that the caliper hits was getting loose. The question is: could the brake fluid be bad and not letting the caliper off the pad for some reason or should I just try new pads?

i would think that it would have more to do with the caliper then the pads. If the fluid was bad it would be affecting all of your brakes.

As 79 ford f-150 said it sounds more like a caliper problem than a pad problem. Make sure the caliper slides are clean and that they can move freely. When you say the "backing plate that the caliper hits was getting loose" what do you mean? Also, your problem could be the brake hose is not allowing the piston to be pulled back into the caliper slightly as the brake pedal is released. Hose gets old and collapses when a vacuum is pulled on it.

What are the caliper slides? Are you talking about what the pad moves on? The only thing I've lubed are the caliper mount pins. I spray the brake quiet on the side of the pad that meets up with the caliper piston seals.

The backing plate I'm talking about is a slim piece of metal that is riveted to the pad. This piece is loose enough that I can see it bending away from the pad.

If it was the calipers, what can I do besides replace them again?

I'll replace the hoses. Should I be looking at the hose only and not the metal lines? As far as the metal lines, are they good to go if they aren't corroding?

Does the truck shake when braking? Im thinking that it may be either a warped rotor, or a sticky caliper. Im betting on the latter. To work it loose take it off, press it in with a c-clamp, press the brakes, then repeat until loose. May just be better to get a new caliper. Theyr cheap.

MatthewC, there is no shaking when I'm braking. Every once in awhile, I'll get a front end dive to the left when braking hard. These calipers are fairly new (within the year).

From what you all have said here, I'm going to go after new brake hoses and pads and try that. The next question then is, I see the front hoses are different as far as how they hook up. I'm asking this before doing any research but can I buy them as a set? The back looks like a metal line goes to a valve that sends the pressure to each side. Is that correct and can I buy that too?

All three hoses are separate, different parts/part #'s, you can buy them individually. The "valve" at the back is no more than a fitting that is part of the rubber line assembly.
