I have looked on the site here and can't a solution. I recently purchased a new door lock cylinder for my '48', but I can't get the old one out. I have soaked it with a penetrating oil off and on for about two weeks and still can't get it out. Is there a trick or am I just going to have to drill the set screw out. If I have to drill it out, what size of drill bit will I need to use.
I removed my door lock (56 F100) by pulling out the lock retainer. You peel back the weather strip on the inside of the door and use plyers to pull it out. Once out, the door lock drops out. You will need to to place the the lock lever and spring on your new lock and slide it in and make sure it lines up with inside mechanism. Once in you reinsert the lock retainer and your in business.
tacomalight, when I pull back the weather strip there is a small hole and in that hole is a small allen headed set screw so I think a '56' is a little different from a '48'.
Couple of thoughts... is your truck finished? Paint? If not, I'd apply heat to the area.
If painted, then you might try an allen tipped socket for your wrench. I have a set, but have had them so long I don't remember where I picked them up. One of these would direct the torque better than one of those 'L' shaped tools.
If you haven't used PBlaster, pick up a can. I don't use WD40 anymore.
I'd drill as a last resort. Patience will be rewarded. I don't know the exact size, but it's not very big and getting a drill in there straight would be a real challenge..
mtflat, the truck isn't finished but I do have paint on it that I don't want to ruin. I have thought about heat but all I have is a torch. Thinking of borrowing a mini butane torch from a friend.
My dad has the allen tipped sockets but not one that small. I have not heard of PBlaster but I have been using AeroKroil.
Yes patience is the key but I have about ran out it.
It has been a few years since I took out my 47 but I believe there to be a flex washer on the backside of the door. If you take the inside door panel out I believe you can drive the flex washer off and the lock should drop out.
The 48-52 do have a setscrew that holds the lock in. The setscrew is a 8-32.
It's about a half an inch long. I had to drill mine out. I then ran a 8-32 tap in it and it cleaned out just fine.
Be very careful when you drill it.
Good luck!

If the monkey juice and the drill don't work you can buy a after market replacement for about $15 bucks, I don't remember which vendor I got mine from but if you need the info I will look it up.

I had the same problem use blaster and would tap it with a hammer everyday and twist it a little and after two weeks it moved and came out, destroyed an extra door to see what I was dealing with. when you install it use a long this rod to support the locks square shaft as you install it Ed ke6bnl
