Ecm Trouble Codes, Testing Ecm

WENT TO AUTO ZONE FOR A FREE CODE READING AFTER GETTING ENGINE SHUDDER WHILE TOWING, GOT A #172 CODE (OXYGEN SENSOR), NO SURPRISE SINCE I DID A REPAIR TO THE EGR SYSTEM WHICH TAKES EXHAUST FROM THE CAT CONVERTER BACK TO THE ENGINE, CONNECTION TO THE CONVERTER WAS RUSTED AWAY, DID A SHORT TERM REPAIR WITH HEATER HOSE UNTIL I CAN GET THE PART FROM FORD ($50.) BUT ALSO HAD A #452, WHICH IS FAULTY ECM WHICH COULD BE ANYWHERE FROM $99. TO $200. AUTO ZONE WAS GREAT, EVEN PRINTED OUT ABOUT 30" OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR TROUBLESHOOTING THIS PROBLEM. (IF YOU GO TO AUTOZONE, ASK THEM TO DO THIS PRINT OUT, IT IS A GREAT HELP - NOT EVERYONE WILL DO IT) RATHER COMPLEX JOB HOWEVER, LOTS OF WORK WITH AN OHM METER. MY QUESTION IS - DOES ANYONE TEST THE ENGINE CONTROL COMPUTER BEFORE YOU BUY A NEW ONE? i DO NOT WANT TO BUY A NEW O2 SENSOR AND ECM MODULE TO DISCOVER THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD CONNECTION SOMEWHERE

452 is for a lost vss/psom input. There is nothing wrong with the computer, so don't replace it. 172 indicates system is lean, which could be caused by a number of things - vacuum leak, misfire, incorrect operation of the air injection system, or possibly a bad O2 sensor.
