My 1995 F-150 has axle code H9, which is listed as limited slip 3.55. Does this mean I can theoretically leave 2 nice smoky black strips on the pavement or is there more to it?
Also, I'm new to 4x4s. With the hubs locked and in 4H or 4L, do both front wheels turn at an equal rate or can they turn independently?
2 nice smoky black strips from the rear and if equiped with LS front the same can happen. more than likely you have just the left front with power to spin, which would mean open diff in the front.
You will likely only have a limited slip diff in the front axle if someone put one in aftermarket.
To test for limited slip, lift up the frontend so that both tires are off the ground. Put trans in Neutral (with rear wheels blocked) and leave the transfer case in 2wd. Lock both front hubs. Spin one tire by hand and watch what direction the other one spins. If it goes in the opposite direction, it is a standard open differential. If it spins in the same direction, it is some type of limited slip.
