Finally working on brakes

Finally got to working on my brakes, but have a couple of questions. PO installed a 9" rearend on my '62. Don't know what year it is, and there is no ID tag. I was able to locate a complete set of brakes from a donor truck ('64) for the parking brake cables, but they also have self adjusting parts, so I took the whole assembly (backing plates and all) and would like to know if they are a direct swap - they seem to be by eyeballing them. But the brake drums were gone, and I don't know if the ones on my 9" will work on the '64. So what I guess I need to know is can I swap out the brake assembies? If so, I assume I should look for a set of '64 brake drums? The drums on the 9" look pretty narrow, and like the front brakes, wouldn't be surprised if they can't be turned anyway.

Jeff, First of all the 62 F100 would have a 9" from the factory.

I have done the disc upgrade to my 66 and wanted larger rear brakes that were introduced in 68. I got a 68 rear complete and ran into issues with oil fill, so I ended up with my original housing. It was after I got everything buttened up that I found the brake cables were different. I had to go back to replace the cables (everything exchanges) with the originals.

So there is hope. If I had the time I may have redesigned the system and made the new parts work, but I needed to hook up the trailer and go get a truck several hours away.

good luck

John

Thanks. Today, I took shoes & brake drums to the parts store. Ended up just replacing the ones on the truck. Felt safer that way. Would've liked to have the 2" brakes, but after a couple chats with brake shops, I decided down the road I'll take another look, but for now, Ford's original idea will do. As it was, the brake cylinders were so crudded up anything would help.
