Hi all,
Well, my parents "maybe" found their next car. (They recently sold a Benz S500) Today we looked at a 2002 Ex. Limited V8 Gas engine with 68K miles on the clock. The dealer wants $23,900 for it. The Ex. is a perfect color too (black/tan). I don't think it has the rear DVD player, but heck it has just about everything else. What do I look for when looking over the Ex ? For a 2002 I think it is in great shape. Obviously this would be my parents vehicle (my mom's) but I know 10000% more about this stuff than they do Plus, I figure it would look nice sitting next to my truck in the driveway We'll be going back to the dealership (A Dod*e dealership to top it off, ahhhhh) to do a possible test drive, and give them some paperwork.
Any advise would be great !
2002 - must be the 7.3L diesel ?
if so, 68K is just broken in....
but I would consider the extended warranty if you can get the price down around the $1K range....
The 4 speed tranny was the weak point on my 02 7.3L X....
Sounds like a nice truck. I would work on that price a little. I just bought an 03 Limited V10 4X4 w/ 25,000 miles for $26,000. It was purchased off of a Ford dealership's used car lot. They can do better than $24K! As far as your question goes, I would take a good look at the rear bumper and hitch. If it has been used for extensive towing, you will see the signs there. The truck is very capable of towing heavy loads, but I don't trust that everyone knows how to treat and engine and transmission properly. My .02, good luck!
I am in the market for an Excursion too. I started out looking for a used one but now I am leaning at an 04 leftover with the 6.0L PSD if I can find one. One word of caution is that the 5.4L V8 gasser is somewhat under powered for a vehicle as heavy as an Excursion. If your parents plan to tow anything I'd suggest that they try to find a V10 or the PSD. If they just want the Ex for it's size and people hauling capacity then maybe the V8 will be fine for them. Another thing is the Ex with the 5.4L V8 doesn't hold it's resale value very well at all compared to the PSD or V10.
I originally was looking at a leftover 2004 PSD, but they are pretty much gone in LoCal where I live. The good news was I ordered the *exact* 2005 I wanted, option by option (pretty much just got everything, anyway) and the msrp was just $50 more I think than the equivalent 2004.
The bad news was that there was (is?) a $2000 or $3000 rebate on 2004's from Ford, and only a $500 on 2005 eX's. Oh well.

Hey guys, just an update:
Got back from the dealer a little while ago. The Ex. IS in fact the V10, with 62K miles on the clock. All the paper work is done, and all we're doing now is waiting too see if they accept the loan application. We will know Saturday of this week if it's ours or not. Eather way, their is a "sold" sign on her as we speak.
