I bought a used leer cap for my 94 f150. I have tried to wire the third brake light off of the towing wire harness. This works fine until I flip on the turn signal which causes the brake light to blink.
Is there a wire I can tap into that will eliminate this problem?
I read where there was a wire under the hood - drivers side- that was for the third brake light, is this true and if so, where is it located?
You will have to use the wire that goes to the third brake light on back of the cab. This wire goes directly to the brake switch, while the other wires you have been trying to use go thru the turn-signal switch.
I don't know what color it is, but I would think the wire would run down the double wall of the cab and come out on the driver's side floor, and run under the rocker panel trim piece.
Not sure about the 94 model, but the brake wire color for the earlier model Fords were red with blcak stripe. As a general rule the color codes stay the same. Splice into the wire where it comes out of the brake light switch, it should be under the dash near the brake pedel. There two wires going to the switch. one has a constant 12 V and the other has 12 V only when the brake is applied, that is the one to tap into.
Well, I got everything wired today. I spliced into the wiring harness at the base of the drivers side seat where it splits to go to the third brake light on the cab.
On my '94, the brake wire to tap into is solid green.
While I was at it, I spliced into the lighter green with the orange stripe wire. This provides constant power. I used it to run a second wire for a light I mounted inside the cap.
