About 3 weeks ago, I ran over a chunk of blacktop with my Aerostar, which scraped the bottom and made a hell of a noise
Two days later, my Rear ABS light came on, and hasn't went out since.
As per advice from a friend, I checked for brake fluid leakage, and found none. Checked the Rear ABS fuse, and it's good. Unhooked the battery cables for a few minutes and hooked it back up, and the light came right back on upon starting the engine.
Not sure if the thing I ran over has anything to do with it at all, but it's a good possibility.
Anyone know what else to check? Is this a common problem?
One thing I notice since the light has been on- The brakes work more "normal", and don't feel like the rotors are in need of being turned down at times when I have to go extra hard on the brake pedal... I'm told that's one of the "side effects" of having anti-lock brakes, and while I like it with them working smoother, I also like the idea of having anti-lock brakes, and knowing they work.
On my '92 i had a bad connector on my wheel speed sensor, and that made the ABS light come on and go off whenever it pleased. Took it in thinking I needed an ABS pump, which runs around $200 something, the shop manager told me it was a simple connector. I think it is highly possible that you may have damaged either the pump or a sensor somewhere, and it is causing your problem. Also note that when running with the ABS not working properly, your rear brakes can stop working. This about caused me to reck at 80mph on Interstate 26 in Clumbia, South Carolina, When I was on my way home from work. Stupid semi cut me off and I had to stop FAST, great time for the brakes to stop working!
Yeah, I definitely need to get that thing up on a ramp or lift, to get a real good look at the underneath.
I'm really lucky that the chunk of blacktop didn't cut my gas tank!
Also, the article someone else posted looks to be a major help, if the problem doesn't lie underneath; Check out the thread titled "RABS problems Everything you ever wanted to know" if you haven't yet!
