I was going to convert to an automatic but have since changed my mind. the thing is i have a 79 f 150 with a 300. I live in the city, and i don't do any heavy hauling or toeing with it. So what trans. will fit that does'nt have the granny gear i am tired of doing all of my shifting in the first 5 seconds after leaving every light and being stuck in 3'rd gear in trafic with the engine whineing or stalling. any help would be appreciated.
would that make a big differance in speed before i have to shift? i can do most of my engine work, but i know jack about trans. and rear ends. The most i'v done was to change my clutch and u-joints
tomarow i will look under it and find out what gears i have now.
im still in the learning stages on this subject myself, but from what i gather, changing the gearing in the rear end will affect the rpm at a given speed.
not sure about whether to goto a higher number or not for what you want.
do a search on gear ratio in the tranny or suspension forums and i'll bet you find some answers.
Changing the gears isn't horibly bad as long as you have a 9" rearend. i helped a friend do his a few weeks ago.
You need to remove the rear brakes on both sides, unbolt the retainers (4 bolts per side), slide the axel shafts out, then unbolt and remove the third member. If you buy from a yard, you can get the entire third memeber and replace it in one swap. Make sure that to note weather your fill plug is on the third member or on the back of the housing. My freind forgot to do this and we ended up having to drill a new hole and tap it in the case. Its just as easy tio reassemble everything as you reverse the process.
Seeing that you currently have a 300 I6 and 3 speed, I'd bet you have 2:72 gears. I'd move up to a 3:26 or 3:56 or so gear set. Would move your shift point up enough to make it stay around second gear in the 35 mph to 40 mph range but still give you the take off you currently have. Going any lower geared (higher number) could affect you fuel millage.
i have a 4 speed but in traffic i am running in 2nd and 3rd gears. 2nd gear 5 mph to 7 or 8 mph, 3rd gear 8 to mabe 30 mph and thats winding it out, 4th gear 30 mph and up

Sounds like you have a low geared rear end (higher number) maybe a 3.70 or a 4.11. Theres no way you have 2.72 gears if you are shifting into 4th at that speed, if you aren't lugging the engine. If you don't do any towing then a higher gear will work better. My brother has a '76' with a 2.75 rear and it loves the highway! I've heard of F-100's and F-150's with anywhere from a 2.43 to a 4.11 from the factory(just what I've heard). Look around for a used 9" rear with a better gear for what you need, there are plenty out there. Maybe someone else knows how the higher gear will effect your shift speeds.
i thought aeromac was talking to me for a second.
are you sure(79f150) that you're just not used to how loud these engines are?
if you dont have a tach. i'd be willing to bet that you're lugging the engine.
if its a 4 speed man. it'll shift you to 4th at 30mph without clatter but you might want to try taking it to 40mph in 3rd. if i'm wrong, you'll know right away because your engine will tell you, "i'm not speeding up any more, shift me!"
