2 Distributor gears blown
About 8,000 miles ago, I had my F350, 460 (1991) rebuilt. Last weekend I was traveling down to a friends house and the engined backfire some awful. All power was lost. A local mechanic had to use an impact hammer to remove the distributor and found the gear was chewed bad but ALSO below the gear where it connects to the oil rod was bits of metal. He looked down the shaft and said the housing that held the lower end of the distributor shaft was egg shaped and probably casued the misalignment of the gears.
We put in a new distributor and went about twenty miles and it happened again. I had it towed into town. The timning chain cover was removed and the oil pump generated presssure, the cam gears were intact but the cam shaft was able to move back and forth 1/4 with waer marks on the pressure plate.
To say the least I am in a world of hurt as the engine was rebuilt in Canada on a trip.
Question is it possible to recut the egg shape hole in the engine to an oversized hole and make a busing for the distributor to seat to stop the shaft from walking.
