I just changed the transmission fluid and filter today and saved myself $100.
Dealer wanted $133.00, plus tax and I'm sure some other charges.
They wanted $99.00 just to do a flush and fill!
This coming from a guy that hasn't changed his oil in 4 years.
I used MERCON V, I hope that's the right stuff. I know the manual calls for MERCON, but the bottle said it could be used in vechicles that speced MERCON.
I have a 1992 3.0 for which Mercon 3 is specified. Ford says Mercon V should not be used for the 1992, only for the 1997. Some other ATF manufacturers say Mercon V can be used in place of Mercon 3. When I bought the van with 129k miles the ATF was black. I flushed and filled with Mercon V and used that for over 100k miles with no problems whatsoever. I have since switched to a 100% synthetic. Most 100% synthetic universal ATFs claim to meet the specifications of all Mercons and many other types of ATF. Jan Richter.
