well this is probably a stupid question but I'm gonna ask it anyway. keep in mind that this is my first truck and I'm new to the truck world.
I have a 99 F150 4x4 offroad 5.4L V8. I was drriving down the road yesterday on the highway (that was just repaved) and I was having a very bumpy ride. So when I got home I checked under the truck and relalized that I have no front springs, just shocks. Is that normal on the off road model. I've looked on other 4x4 offroads and they have springs. As far as I know everything is stock on it. what should I do?
The 4x4 has torsion bars, not springs on the front. You will see a steel bar about 1" in diameter running from the lower a arm to a frame cross member. That is your "spring".
Now that I do have I was wondering what those bars where. So how do I know if the torsion bars are going bad? Is that why I have such a bumpy ride? OR could that be the shocks going bad?
I plan to get the shocks replaced when I buy new tires next month any suggestions on what to buy.
It is probably the shocks. Are the shocks all black. If so they are the originals. I would also think about replacing the rear shocks, especially if they are original.
yup they are all black. the truck has a little over 62K on it. i thought it probably would be the shocks. Any suggestions on a good shock to replace with. I've heard Rancho are good.
The three main names that keep coming up are Rancho, Edelbrock, and Bilstein. Personally I have had Bilsteins and liked them. Othe decent ones are Gabriel and Monroe. I would not count these as good as the Bilsteins I had. I have used both of these. One advantage is they are half the price of the Ranchos, Edelbrocks, and Bilstein,
I've looked on other 4x4 offroads and they have springs.
if there were no springs (or spring system) you would know it for sure, trust me, lol.
and dude.....there is NO such thing as a stupid question. you can count on us to answer ya.
make sure your torsion bars aren't already gone. all a set of shocks will do is cover up your problem until it get so bad you can't fix it cheap. i would look into a set of aftermarket bars....check this site out even if it is for a yota a lot of the geometry is pretty close to the same
