9" axle

I have a 73 F-100 4x4. Last year I lost a axle seal and found out my axle was bad(had to replace). Bought brand new one, the only one I found was a 77 and up. They told me my year was superceeded to this. Well i thought I had everything right. New axle, seal(that's pressed on before the bearing), bearing and axle retainer. Well it started leaking again . The retainer was the wrong size and burned up my seal. I want to go back to the original way. Need to have the axle turned to old dimensions. Anybody ever had to do this? Sorry this is a bit winded......Thanks

Shaun, The 73 & 77 axle should be the same, actually to 86 when Ford went to the 8.8. The difference might be 28 & 31 spline but they wont plug in at all in the other count.

The seal is out at the end of the tube and not behind the bearing. If your seal is blown and likely the right side, you might want to check the vent tube where the brake lines come together on the axle. Pressure can build up and blow the seal if it is stopped up.

The seal is less than $10.00 and can be changed out in an hour or less. Remove the vent and make sure it is open then replace the seal. If the wrong parts were installed it would not have worked at all.
