351W to 400 ??

I was talking to a guy the other day (whos knowledge is well konw for being good) and he said that you could take a 351w block and throw in a 400 crank with 351w rods and 302 pistons and get a 400 in a small block bolt pattern. Just curious if anyone else had heard of this and if so how did it run.

Well he was right...but given the avaiability of cast stroker cranks vs. price of machine work/ finding the 400 crank...it might make as much sense just to get something like a scat cast 393 crank and use the stock 351w rods and 302 pistons as you mentioned. The scat crank (393) or 400 crank would put your 351w around 393 cubic inches. later

a 400 crank would make it a 400 right because a 400 is 4x4 and a 351w is 4x3.5 so all that would change is that it would be a small block then

To use the 351w rods and 302 pistons you have to grind the 400 crank to 3.85" = 393ci
Thats why it gets costly, you have to machine the rod journals and crank nose.

If you wanna keep the 4" stroke of the 400 crank then you need different rods and different pistons to get the 402 standard bore or 408 .030 overbore.
This way gets costly because you have to get new rods and different pistons.

If you have the 351w rods and 302 pistons being fairly cost effective, it makes a scat crank seem a bit more cost effective. You still have to balance it but they are known for being close to spec.

Who knows? later

YOu could go big though, offset grind that crank to 4-1/8", use 6.123" rods, appropriate pistons and you would have 427 cubic inch small block...that'll motivate a truck. later
