92 A/C Compressor

92 A/C Compressor
Hi everyone,
We have a 92 4.0 with A/C. Had it a couple of months now, just recently from reading other posts what I presume is the A/C compressor has started clicking on and off about 10-20 sec's or so even with the A/C turned off in the vehicle.
The Girlfriend has commented a couple of times that the A/C is not cold enough when she's used it, but now with winter just round the corner we will probably not need it for a while, so is it OK to disconnect the electrical connection to the compressor - which will presumably turn it off completely until I get round to either looking at it myself or taking it into the shop? (hopefully it just needs a recharge).....
