Slack in transfercase?

Slack in transfercase?
I have a '99 F-350 Powerstroke 4x4 with an auto tranny and manual shift transfer case. It has a terrible amount of slack in the drive train when putting it in gear or letting off the throttle and getting back on it. I jacked it up and it seems to be in the tranfer case or the tranny. Is there some type of coupler between the two that is getting worn or is something else going on?

From working on various trucks, including Fords, it is usually the linkage that is loose. First check all the bolts from the engine/transmission/transfer case. If they are all tight and all there, then it is probably the linkage. One thing you might check out is the rear support for the transfercase/transmission cross member. Generally speaking if it gets ripped or worn, it can create alignment problems for the transfer case.
