What's the secret to getting the 2 screws off on the back of the air cleaner box? I took it in for service today and they told me that they couldn't get to the air filter because the back 2 screws wouldn't come out..I have the new element ready to install if I can get the box open to do it. Any help would be appreciated
well, i know that on my '92 there are little slide in clips on the front of the box, if you push the top part back just right you can get it out of the clips and the pull the filter out fairly easy, though getting it back in is sometimes fun. I haven't ever had to mess with the screws, they stay just the right tightness for the change on my van.....?????
Had a similar problem on my 93 Aero Star & 92 F150. The nut was turning along with the screw. Somehow I got a very small wrench or pliers down below the air filter box and held the nut so I could get the screws out. I epoxed the nuts on the bottom of the box so they would not come off or turn. One way or another you need to check & change the filter or you will kill the engine.
Ok. I had this same problem when I was putting my intake on. The airbox is very funky, and it took me 3 hours to figure it out. What you need to do 1st is get someone to hold the hood up for you b/c the prop will get in your way if you dont. then unhook the electrical sensors. now your going to lift up and move the airbox towards you. you should be able to set in on the frame. then twist it a little but be carful not to twist it too much. then the blots will be easier to get to. you will have to find a very small wrench to get in the space. I hope that works but it maight not. I only got one bolt off that way. If you still cant get the last one off and you cant change the filter w/ only one bolt holding on you can do what i had to do. chip off the corner of the airbox thats giving you problems. You dont want to chip the part that holds air just the "lip' you could call it. once you do that the last one will come off really easy. I hope you have good luck. if you need anymore help e-mail me at paddyd85(No Email Addresses In Posts!) and ill send pics to you of what peice to chip off.
93'Aerostar XLT. Intake, cherrybomb glasspack, dual 3" tip, red LED blinkers, red Street Glow under body kit, 3 ft. neon in back, 10 in. neon on dash.
why not remove the entire intake from the van?
you'll have to unscrew the clamp on the throttle-body,
remove the sensor from the air box, and also will have
to remove the crankcase vent hose.
after that you can easily take the entire thing out and
service it as you wish.
I was able to get some small vise grips down in there and get the nuts off, then i put some nuts i had on it so that i could just use a regular wrench on it next time. this was after i noticed that one of the nuts was missing and the other was very loose, i just hope that nothing got down in the motor. I have a question... how do you get the baffle off that is in front of the air box? do you have to take off the grill to get to it? and on my van there is a hose for the ac that also runs right in front of the air box, can that be moved? if i remove the baffle and move that hose so it can breathe better will there be any difference in power at all???
