The driver and passenger power windows on my 89 Eddie Bauer are no longer working...actually they haven't worked since mid-summer last year. I've been having problems with them on and off for the past 5 years and last summer they finally gave up. I know I'm getting power to the windows because everytime I hit the switch, the interior lights dim. I've taken the panel off but can't really see anything inside the door...the track looks alright but it's hard to tell. Any suggestions?
Also, I got my transmission fixed and it works perfectly...many thanks to Al S. for the schematic of the overdrive servos...it really helped.
did the windows start to not go up or down with out help at first??? both of the aerostars i've owned have had that problem. the one i own right now i have to help them up and down sometimes, and other times they work fine. what i think happens is the rod that is connected to the window gets out of place or bent over time, or maybe loose, also maybe dirt gets into the track??? i don't know for sure, but we got our 93 fixed when we had it and they worked fine... sorry i don't remember exactly what it was as it was a few years back, it was something like what i mentioned before. also in your case maybe the motors are shot??? but it would seem wierd for both to go at the same time though.
For both motors to fail simultaneously would be rare. It's more likely you have a poor connection or bad ground somewhere. Start with the motors. Expose the switches on both door panels and locate the leads going to the motor. Jumper 12v to each motor lead and see if the motors operate the windows. If so, the problem is not in the motor. Next, locate the incoming power lead to each switch and replace them, one at a time, with the same 12v jumper. Try each switch. If window works correctly, then your problem lies between the switch(es) and the power lead. If the passenger window works, but not the driver side, the problem is in driver side switch.
Pry back the rubber boot inside the hinge of the driver's side door. Check the wiring for abraded insulation. With me, first the drivers door lock stopped, followed by both windows and then the power mirrors. Ended up being broken wires within the boot. Good Luck.
Well it seems like everything is getting power to it...if I hit the regulator with a hammer it starts to go down then binds up again so it looks like I'm going to have to disassemble the window to clean/straighten it out. Does anyone have a REALLY good schematic of the front door/window assembly...the one provided in the Haynes manual isn't that great...I can take anything apart but I need a good schematic to put it back together.
On my 89, I have had problems with both sides, independently and simultaneously. I have had an upgraded motor and regulator installed on one side (ford picked up the labor) but like a dummy I didn't get it done on both sides. I don't know when this change was made on the new models. The old motors would accumulate water and freeze up. The permanent magnets in one of my motors were shattered.
On and off, the windows will get stuck in the up position. Remove the motor, reinstall it and it works fine. I found the inner door skin was cracked and this caused the motor to get bound up. I backed up the cracked area with some additional sheet metal and bolts, no problems since.
The old style motors were large and the motor were round. The new style was much smaller, looked all aluminum and made by bosch, a much better designed and built motor. To change over you have to change the regulator with it, I think the tooth pitch on the gears is different.
