I have a 1992 F350 crew cab, 4 wheel drive with dual fuel tanks. The front tank has no problem. When I switch to the rear tank, the truck bogs down under a load and if pushed, will backfire through the carb. To confuse things further, this does not happen if I start off on the rear tank when the engine is cold. It only happens after driving a while. I tried driving with the rear fuel cap off to see if a vacum was being created but the problem remained. I've also run the rear tank down to -0- to make sure that there was no water in the tank.
I am thinking maybe your fuel pump in your back tank is screwed up. Might heat up a bit then not work? Also, we kind of had the same problem with one of my dad's trucks at work. The problem was the fuel pump did not have an in tank filter on it. So, you would start the truck up first thing in the morning and it would usually be fine. But, once you drove a little bit, some crap would get sucked into the pump and it wouldn't work. So it would sit. Then the crap would float down to the bottom of the tank and you would be fine next time it started up. It kept doing that until I dropped the tank and figured it out. Good luck!
Thanks for responding so quickly. We will see if there are any others who have had the same thing happen to them but if not, I guess Ill start with the cheapest thing first...fuel filter.
