when working on my truck,i noticed that i have a clipped wire.it`s on the harness that comes through the firewall a few inches to the left of the master cylinder.there`s a connector in the harness, and the four wires splits into just three wires.two reds, and a white one with a red stripe going around it.the white wire is cut and not hooked up to anything.can anyone tell me where it goes........wayne
I think it's your oil warning light wire. If you remove the 6 screws holding the instrument panel in place, you should be able to see the wire for the oil light. If there's no wire there or the wire is the same colors, that's what it is and where it goes.
i think your right.when i had my engine rebuilt,i had them install a mechanical oil pressure guage.i looked and they installed it where the old sensor screwed into the block.i thought they were both hooked up and running,at least thats what i was told.would it be possible for me to run both?........wayne
Yes, can run both. Will need to locate an adaptor where you can include the elect. oil sending unit. Both of mine are on the same adapter. Have one wire running from the elect. sending unit, for 65 color code is white w/ red tracer, to the gauge, and another running from the constant volt regular, blk with green tracer, on the back of instrument cluster to the other side of gauge. Have both, thought as long as have gauge might as well put to use. Unually can find the adapter if browse salvage yard. Made one up using 1/4" pipe and a T fitting.
Yeah, mine has both. The original adapter looks like a piece of 3/4 inch square stock that is threaded on one end with two holes towards the other end to recieve the two sending units. This turns in right next to the oil filter where your single guage should now be located. And your right, if something is there it should be used.
did you have to thread the 1/4 inch pipe or were you able to find a peice already made up?did the threads on the t fitting match the threads on the sending units?thanks for the info.......wayne
Mine was on the engine when I bought it. I believe it to be original. You could make one up with fittings or you could go the junkyard route and try to find an original. I have never tried to find one in NOS but I have to believe they are out there. How authentic are you trying to be or are you into functionality?
Sorry, misposted. It was 1/2" course, believe 18 thread. Did not have to tap. Suggest take the sending unit and match correct size and thread for pipe and 'T' fitting. As you are aware, there are 2 different types of sending units; mechanical, and electrical. Both will have same thread size. Went with brass, no particular reason, painted anyway. If can salvage original wire with electrical fittings and wire in good condition, all the better. Do not know why can not use wire for fuel gauge, usually find them intack and do not have to cut thru dash harness. Suggest tagging for future reference if go this route. Can also purchase fittings and wire from auto supplier. Only need about 6' of 14 or 16 gage wire.
Anyhow, good luck
