Just picked up my F150 about 2 weeks ago. After a few days I noticed a very small (about 1/4 the size of a dime) paint chip in the lower right corner of the tailgate. It looks like it may have been a paint drip that burst. I brought it back to the dealer and he said that they would pay to have it fixed by the auto body shop. I then brought it to the body shop and the guy said that it would be best to try some touchup paint followed by a sealer first to see if it worked and did not rot. He seems to think that it will not rot out. He said that he would rather not paint a new truck if he doesn't have to. I then went back to the dealer and asked for a new tailgate (I already applied a spray on bed liner) but they said that they would not be able to switch the tailgate due to the spray on liner. What do you think that I should do? Is it worth fighting for a new tailgate? They also said that I can wait for the a while and have it repainted down the road before the warranty runs out. The blemish is barely noticable, I just do not want it to rot. Thanks
Since you did not discover this flaw before you left the dealership, and you have coated it, there is nothing you can do. You have no way of proving that this was a flaw from the factory, instead of a 'self inflicted wound'. Since it is a brand new vehicle, the touch up and reseal should work fine. I would just get it repaired as soon as you can. The less time it is exposed to the elements, the better.
The thing is this......the dealer actually acknowledged that it could not be something that I caused and is definately a factory paint defect. It is only noticable to me if I stand within 5 feet away. The dealer actually reccommended that I wait for just before the warranty is up and have it repainted then so this way I can also have any other scratches and dents that would have occurred by then.
Well if the dealer isnt going to fight with you about it, I say just get it fixed. I do not understand, however, why they told you to hold out till the end. It is ideas like that, that cost Ford more $$ every year to do business. Those costs get rolled back into production, and we all end up paying more.
If the dealer is willing to repaint and they can do a good job, let them do it. It won't rust faster as they will just repair the chipped spot, blend in a little basecoat, and clear the whole tailgate. The chances a new tailgate will have a perfect paint match is just about zero.
Touching it up isn't a bad plan but if the dealer wants to fix it, fine. The main object here would be to get it covered so corrosion can't get started.
