1988 Upgrade

:-staun This might appear weird, but I must hold onto my '88 Aerostar and in a bid to improve it's paltry performance I was wondering......a conversion to dual exhaust, K/N air filter and possibly a performance chip........do those things sounds wacky? The vehicle in question has 56,000 original miles on it. I must travel highways often and this little snotnose is lacking punch. I figure it'd be less costly to upgrade rather than replace. Comments, questions suggestions. I would really like to replace it with a sedan, but have no real cash right now.

To me that sounds kind of cool. I have always wanted to put some power in my aerostar, but have'nt been able to find the parts I want and haven't had the spare cash to do it, YET! I wouldn't mind havind dual exhaust on my aero, any body know of a company that sells the parts needed? what brand to go with as far as mufflers? also I want to lower it but haven't yet found a way to do it. Maybe i'll be like that guy that had that aero on ebay with the 5.0 in it, and the nitrous system now that's power.

I have a 1992 3.0L and have made 3 simple modifications that gave a noticeable increase in power. My regular run includes a certain grade on the interstate. Prior to these mods the van was unable to get up this grade in OD, and could barely manage 70 mph. After the mods the van easily climbed this grade in OD at 70 mph. Here are the mods: (1) K&N filter - about $38 from expressautoparts.com. What K&N don't tell you is how noisy it is, albeit on WOT only, - an intake roar. The power increase will be about midway between performance without any air filter, and performance with a new stock filter. (2) Advanced ignition by 3 degrees. No pinging with regular grade fuel. Seemed to get a further performance increase with mid-grade fuel. (3). Use full synthetic oil. Jan Richter
