3rd row seating

Looking at trading in the minivan for an expedition. I've found a 98, but it didn't have 3rd row seating. What year did they start putting them in, so I can make the wife happy, and consequently, me happy?

1997 was the first year. If you've seen one without the third seat, it was either ordered without it or it has been removed. If there are 4 steel inset lugs in the floor, then a third seat was originally installed on the vehicle and someone is trying to slip one by you.

Thanks nckracer, you also answered my next Q, by mentioning the fact that it should have the "spots" for a 3rd row, if the seat is not in it.

Another giveaway to detecting an Expy originally equipped with a third row seat would be the presence of the shoulder harness system mounted to the rearmost roof pillars.
