Use the VIN and rating plate decoder in the Read First: thread to determine the axle ratio etc.

I'll bet the Stang motor and the 5 speed is nice in the ole truck. I'm not real knowledgeable about 9" Ford rearends since my Highboy is a Dana 60 but, if it don't have a cover and bolts on the rear of it then it's probably a 9" Ford which the whole chunk (3rd member) will pull out the front.

One way that you can get a pretty good ballpark figure on what the rearend ratio is, is to mark the drive shaft at a certain point ( and also, one of the rear tires). Say with the valve stem up or down. Roll the tire around one complete revolution and count how many times the driveshaft turns.

Say for instance, the driveshaft turns 2 3/4 turns, then it might be like a 2.73 to 1 or close to that. If it turns 3 1/2 turns, then it might be in the 3.50 to 1 range. By doing this, you can easily at least get an idea of what your ratio is close to without having to pull it apart.

There's probably other folks on this forum that could coach you better about 9" Ford rearends and what to look for. Tell your friend not to make to many of the Mustang guys feel bad by out running them in the Ole Hammer Truck!! Ha Ha.

30 over, you made one tiny mistake. if he's only gonna turn one tire, it has to be turned 2 times (alows for going through the spider gears)

what i do, is jack one tire up, mark it, then mark the d-shaft. now one person turns the one rear tire 20 times, and the other person counts the d-shaft rotations. then divide by 10. if you cound 35, then you have 3.50 gears..

doing it that way will let you tell the difference between 3.00, and 3.10 gears

That is a good method, I just may add that to the FAQ section, with proper credit of course.

Thanks for correcting me on that. I don't want to give false information. I see where you could get it more accurate with more turns. I checked out your gallery. It looks like things are coming along well. Keep up the good work.
