Question engine oil leaking into air filter!!

We have a 1985 Bronco II, with an 2.8 engine out of a 1984. The engine was converted back from propane when we installed it into the '85.
Of course we've had the usual problems, stalling, etc. But the most recent issue that's come up is an oil leak that's spraying into the air filter. The truck's going thru about 2litres of oil a week, the whole underside of the vehicle is pretty much coated in oil, from the 'spray' I assume?
We think the trouble may have started when a friend borrowed the truck and almost ran it out of oil? Could it be coming from the rear main seal? Any suggestions would be a God-send!
Thanks in advance!!

time to have the engine rebuilt..sounds like the rings/pistons are toast..i'm sure the propane toasted the insides

roasted inside

your toast if you got oil running underneath and in air filter propane in a b2 you toasted rings and pistons,etc... not a good idea for such a truck

That isn't the kind of news I wanted! The motor was rebuilt 40,000km ago. Seems to be the general consensus on my problem tho.
And no, propane on a Bronco II is NOT a good alternative, which is why we converted it back to gas when we put it into our truck. The engine in the '85 was very tired, so when we picked up the '84 and swapped motors, we'd hoped to buy it some more time. Didn't even last a year.

this is messed up. I can't see why anyone would convert an automobile to propane. Although I have a friend who heats his garage with it because he gets it really cheap from a provider next to his shop. I have seen lift equipment with the conversion. How is it the lifts can burn it safely but a truck couldnt. Is it a lubrication issue? why was it converted in the first place? Did the old owner have a connection on the propane?
Where was the tank? In the back seat?
This gets stranger the more I overanalyze it.
Then again, I have seen box trucks with propane engines. I guess it could be feasable. Did the propane damage the engine or could it be a bad rebuild? Very interesting. I think I once knew more about running engines on propane but I am drawing a blank.

edited for language.......if it trips the language filter or you have to disguise it so it doesn't, please hit the edit button and try again

OK now that the propane and profane have been dealt with: An oil leak that is spraying into the air filter.... Is the PVC hose dumping oil into the air filter housing?

If you have a spray, can you not see the source when the motor is running?

Another possibility is the oil pressure sender. I've seen these pump oil like mad on a 4.0. On that road oiler, it was on the driver (R as you face the vehicle) side in front.

A rear main leak would give you a nice oil coat from the rear main back, under the car. It would require quite a stream and a good aim to get from the rear main to the air filter.

If you "almost" ran out of oil but you aren't hearing clunks and knocks the clicks, your low oil situation probably didn't do much damage. Your 2.8 is a solid lifter job right?

If you can't see the source, get out the old t-shirts and worn out towels and some solvent and clean the oil off the motor. Then put on the goggles and fire it up. If that doesn't work, get some dye for the oil and try that.

Good luck.
