I have a 66 PU with a frozen 390(probably out of an early 60's T-bird). I am looking at a 77 PU with a 360 for disc brake and parts. I will probably put a 73 Merc 429 in it. Can I mix and match the the FE motors and avoid the motor mount and header changes? The 360 is an average tired 2bbl truck motor.
hey if you want to put the 360 in it everything will work perfect. but since the 429 is not an fe you will have to get 429 or 460 mounts for the truck. as for the disc brakes they will swap over.
Most of the advice on the 66 forum says that I might as well do a frame swap as change several things. But that is not what I have in mind. The FE motor I have has C4AE 6090G heads and intake C4SE 9425A.There was rust in the back pass cyl when the head was pulled.I have not taken it farther apart to have it checked yet. I assume I have too much compression for everyday road hauling, which is my intended use for the truck.Since both these trucks have been rode hard and put up wet, I will rebuild either engine.
i would rebuild the 390 mainly because i know nothing about the 429's and 460's. or if you want you could rebuild the 360. it may have to work a little harder than the 390 but it should get the job done.
oh forget to tell you, you can get the crank and rods out of the 390 and buy new pistons and put that in the 360 and it will be a 390. well get back with us about what you want to do. there are alot of people here who can help.
i just got to thinking, i think those are 427 high riser heads and intake.some one please correct me if i am wrong.
Those were cast the same year as most 427 HR stuff but I am not sure. I don't have info on the exact casting numbers. Check the valve sizes on them. Just measure the face. Also measure the height and width of one of the intake ports.
Tha bore is 4". The intake ports are about 2.25 tall. The rocker shafts are about 2-3/16.The valves seem standard 1.5" exh & 2" int. The more I look at the clogged waterpassages ect, the better the 429 looks to me. I need to call L&L and switch forums. Thank you.
