Front Differential seal
The seals are starting to go iin my rear end. The driver side rear axle seal went, and I've replaced it. I replaced the Passenger rear as well. The Pinion seal has a leak that needs attention, and I'm wondering how this seal gets replaced. Right now the leak is small, but I see strip where the pinion flange has flung oil up to the underside of the bed. The truck is 21 years old so I expect seals and such to go. I've looked at F150 forums and a transmission rebuilder has stated that the all ford OEM rear axles use a collapsing spacer in the pinion bearings to ensure propler backlash in the gears. To tight or to loose has disasterous consequences on the life of the gears/bearings. My Haynes book is useless. and just tells you to replace the side seals.
Has anybody done this job or is this a job for the pros? Where would I find the proceedure for doing this job?
