im about to buy a 1972 gran torino and i believe it has a 351 cleveland it has the small sparkplugs if that helps, whats a way to tell if its a cleveland or a modified and whats the difference?are clevelands good engines ?what kindof gas mileage? or is it best to go to a 351 windsor or a 302? it has an automatic tranny and a "9 rear end,i thought gran torinos came out with "8's why would it have the 9?its all original
Well if you know for a fact it is a 351, and you know it is the origanal engine, and you also know it's not a windsor then it is a cleveland, best way to check that is 8 bolts in the valve covers, and the water neck mounting surface, and the front of the intake mounting surface are equal height then it is a cleve if the intake sits higher than the water neck it is a 351m/400.
And torinos came with 9s not the 8 they are a full frame car, and as far as I know the 8in only came in unibody cars, but I have been wrong before.

There are other indicators but these may help.
The Cleveland is a good high RPM high HP engine but trucks are heavy and require torque at low RPM's to make them move. The Cleveland was only used in lighter sports type vehicles.

Not entirely true they were also used in ltd's, and mid sized mecury's, and alot in torinos, and I wouldn't call that a lighter sports type of vehicle, your reasoning for them not being in trucks is entirely correct but they could be found in almost any of the ford or mercury cars that had V8s in them.
