im about to buy a 1972 gran torino and i believe it has a 351 cleveland it has the small sparkplugs if that helps, whats a way to tell if its a cleveland or a modified and whats the difference?are clevelands good engines ?what kindof gas mileage? or is it best to go to a 351 windsor or a 302? it has an automatic tranny and a "9 rear end,i thought gran torinos came out with "8's why would it have the 9?its all original

Well if you know for a fact it is a 351, and you know it is the origanal engine, and you also know it's not a windsor then it is a cleveland, best way to check that is 8 bolts in the valve covers, and the water neck mounting surface, and the front of the intake mounting surface are equal height then it is a cleve if the intake sits higher than the water neck it is a 351m/400.
And torinos came with 9s not the 8 they are a full frame car, and as far as I know the 8in only came in unibody cars, but I have been wrong before.

everything except the 289, 360-390 and 300 I6 had small 5/8" spark plugs.

The best way to tell is that the 400/351C has 8 bolt valve covers, and the 400 has a 10.7" wide intake, and the 351C is narrower. 6 bolts is W

I will post this again:

Engine Identification:
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 10.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.

4V heads have the letters 4V at top corners of the heads.

No 351c's in trucks. All 335 series have the tilted dizzy and dry intake manifold and 8 bolts on the valve covers.

The Cleveland is a good high RPM high HP engine but trucks are heavy and require torque at low RPM's to make them move. The Cleveland was only used in lighter sports type vehicles.

Not entirely true they were also used in ltd's, and mid sized mecury's, and alot in torinos, and I wouldn't call that a lighter sports type of vehicle, your reasoning for them not being in trucks is entirely correct but they could be found in almost any of the ford or mercury cars that had V8s in them.

The main reasoning was that the FE was a good enough motor at the time, that it wasn't necessary to have a 351, only 9 cubic inches difference.

Its the same reason they didn't put the Windsor in the trucks.
