I own a 93 Aerostar with an A4LD402 tranny...about a month ago it locked up and the Ford garage guy said one of the solenoids was stuck because of metal filings...They put in new filter and charged $150 and the guy said he didnt know how long that would last...I didnt get out of sight of the Ford garage when it locked up again...took it to a local guy (I dont know what he did) but he said it needed rebuilt ($1200) but I could drive it in 1st and second...drove it home (couple of miles) without incident. Parked in drive cause Im afraid to go anywhere in it.....
Question: would it be worth the trouble to drop tranny and "clean" it out in some way? I have the tools and whatnot to do it...looking for advice good bad or otherwise as too whether I should bother or just push it over the hill...Body and interior still nice.
Thanks for the advice. Actually I was wondering if I could do it myself ( I keep my 79 F250 and 88 Dodge Caravan alive and well no matter whats broke on them lol)
Everyone wants $1200 to rebuild and out of the junk yard is $1000 and they wont guarentee a flush under the conditions I describe. They said it would just push the "gunk" deeper into the tranny...I was going to try and do it myself..I only paid $1500 for it and drove it 26,000 in the 10 months I've had it...I dont really want to put a lot of cash into it....
Yesterday I bought a Shift correction package from NAPA for it ($65.00) and my dad told me I could clean out the valve body with solvent. Should I try and take the shift correction package back?
If doing it myself fails I am not going to be out too much and I will just sell it as is for $300 to a guy who wants it. Mostly I want to get it running to trade it in.
btw do you know where I can get a 351M cheap? lol I blew mine up Saturday...While I have you here (if you read this) and your Ford experienced What is you opinion on buying a long block from NAPA or AUTO something to start building an engine for my truck?
