OK, I bought an explorer rear end and just as you said it is 59 and 1/2 inch.
So I have to correct about 1/2 inch on each side. How do I do this? The springs with new pins and bushings don't move at all so I can't force it. Do I drill new holes a 1/2 inch outside the old holes? I don't want to cut off and reweld the existing flanges.

I know you don't want to hear this , but the usual procedure is to cut off the existing spring pads and weld on new ones.
Thanks, I will cut and move the brackets. Is the large offset going to be OK? I understand that most rear ends have some offset. Why is this?
56,
The offset will not hurt anything as the driveshaft U-joints will conpensate for it. The offset is necessary due to the way the ring and pinion gears mesh...
Hi, Vern is right, the only way to install the diff. properly is to cut the mount off and reweld them in the proper location. I think the offset on the Explorer diff is because of the output on the transfercase. I am useing the same set up on my 56 and am not expecting any problems. Ozzie
Ok I am looking at buying a 1998 Ford Explorer with 3.73 gears and Posi for my 1950 with a flat 6 and a 4 speed. How did this go for you? How about the driveshaft and u-joints what did you have to change to make it work?
Project " TYMNBUX" is getting a 3:73 with discs from a 2002 exploder and I just rewelded the new mounts. The drive line is being built at the local DL shop as they have many of the flanges to use to weld on my tube. This will save me from buying a complete driveshaft just to get the rear portion. I will have updates in gallery soon. ( PS, Price of complete lo milage diff. $300.00)
