Cooling system chnge/flush questions.

I read the tech article at this site, but still have questions. Do you leave the radiator cap on or off while circulating water during the flush cycle, and also do you leave the cap on or off after you fill the radiator with your 50/50 mix and start the motor to cycle the mix through the motor? How long should you let the engine cool before draining after the flush cycle? Will the system purge the air out by itself? How will I know if something went wrong before its too late, such as the engine is not circulation water and cooking my motor? My fear is to take a perfectly good engine and ruin it by trying to do a good thing.

I recently flushed the coolant system on my ranger. I used the Prestone flush kit which can be had at Wal-mart for $2.44. I also bought the Prestone Power flush and cleaner additives. The directions are idiot proof and it is a very effective flush. You will be suprised when you see how much junk was actually in your engine. It was disgusting. I am not familiar with what flush procedure you are talking about, but I highly recommend this prestone flush. To answer some of your questions, I leave the cap on for all procedures except when you actually BACKflush the system; again, this is all in the directions of the flush kit. It will purge itself of air bubbles and you temperature guage will let you know if you're cooking your engine, which is highly unlikely. And you won't mess up your motor, so no worries about that. Your truck will cool a lot more efficiently with out all that crud stuck in it. Hope this helped you out!

I'd never put a cap on there till I was finished! The cap will start building up pressure and also you cannot look into the radiator to see if you need more liquid!
Take it off and drain the fluid.. install and run the cleaner...drain the cleaner...install WATER to rinse... drain and install final liquid of your choice. run a few minutes till the thermostat is open and keep filling as needed.. NOW and only now install the cap and you are finished.
