My son has a 1991 Bronco. The body has only a little rust in the tailgate. Other than that it is in good shape. He is 16 and has a job so he pays for the rig himself. It has 138,000 miles on it. 5.8 motor, EFI, auto. We have put new brakes and a complete tune-up including new hoses and belts. He has bought new tires and rims for it. They told us the the valves are bad and will need to be replaced. This is a shop that we use alot and trust. I asked them to give me a qoute on a rebuild. To get a rebuilted engine, service the trans, go thru the rad and clean it and install they gave us a price of $3833.17. They will use all the new parts that they have already put on.
My son can get a loan to pay for it. He likes the Bronco but sometimes wishes he had a truck. Trade in for it would be around 2500.00 to 2800.00.
My question is: Is this year worth putting the money into or not. He is in 10th grade and it will be his only transportation.
The only other thing that needs done is the front end has some slope in it. Easy fix.
Any help would be great.
Thanks, TWolf
Fix it. For that price...what are you going to get a truck that has a warranty on the engine and poss tranny. (If they offer it). I bought mine for $500, put 5K into the engine, tranny and drive train with a 5yr 50k mile warranty. She hit 100k on the new parts and 275k when I bought my new pickup. Now it is in the shop for a full ground up restoration. Everyone has a pickup, not everyone has a bronco. Pickups are nice for ease of hauling. Broncos have an attitude and style all their own. Even tho mine is only in the shop and not gone, I still miss her. Plus you can't take the top off of a pickup.
Too bad you did not live in Vegas. I have 1990 eddie bauer with a 351 that was just rebuilt in it. The truck runs fine but the e40d is on its last leg. I got it up for $1800. Nice truck, bad tranny, I think cause the code says something about a converter clutch failure. Just like what billybob said, keep it! They are getting harder and harder to find. I love my 88 and I plan on keeping it till I die! It gives me problems here and there but I love it when people tell me that it is the cleanest looking Bronco they have ever seen. Even if you can not swing the new motor right now park it, later down the road you will be glad you did.
Thanks, my son still drives it everyday. At least I know he can't get a speeding ticket in it. It also has a 2" exhaust and all new exhaust system. The stereo is a Kenwood CD player that the front plate turns itself around so it looks like nothing is there. Pretty cool. Int is clean and not torned up. Part of the top trim is missing but no leaks. I'll have to show him this site. Well I'm off to go camping for the weekend. And thanks again for your input .
