I am down here in Homestead. We learned a few really hard lessons from Andrew. Our home is buttoned up as well as it can be and we are trying not to spend too much time watching the news on TV. The good news is that Frances is now just off to the east of my location so it looks like Homestead has been spared the worst of this storm. Now I get to worry about TS Ivan!
I should add one of the thingds we learned from Andrew was to get our supplies in order early. We have several cases each of tinned Chicken & Dumplings, Beef Stew, Spam, Tuna, etc. We added 50 gallons of water, some Crystal Light (can make pond water taste a little better) and powdered Coffee too. In early August Outdoor World had a sale on ammo so I got a couple thousand rounds of .223, 9x19mm and .45acp just in case the Golliwogs attempt to do their thing like they did after Andrew. I function fired my "hurricane guns" three weeks ago and am good to go!
Us too, BlackF350, 441 and I-75 are bumper to bumper northbound! Hopefully it'll weaken enough that our damage will be minimal by the time it gets to us!
This does not look like fun at all.
in miami right now we have rain and some hard winds enough to make my 2 rigs sway. but that's about it all you guys up in west palm beach all the way to jacksonville good luck guys hope it doesn't do to much of anything it went from cat 4 to cat 2 so hopefully not much happens anyways stay safe .

Good advice. Especially the gun part! Unless you have been through it you just don't realize what really happens.
I reckon things have gotten a lot more organized than in 1992 when Andrew hit Homestead. As well, it seems that the forces of law and order are forcibly sent in right after a storm these days and that is a good thing. On the other hand I really do not think most folks know what it was like in certain areas of Homestead after Andrew hit. A total breakdown of social order and civility. It was scary.
On a truck note I guess those of us who have been through these storms ought to make some vehicle type suggestions. Next to securing gas and simple tools to repair items on your vehicle make certain you also have plenty of tire repair kits and the ability to inflate your own tires. There will be nails, roofing bits and all sorts of junk in the roads after the storm. We averaged about a flat every other day. The best repair kit are the type with the long needle like bit that threads a chunk of rubber plug into the hole. Don't be a dolt and go yanking out the nails right when you see them. You can drive a long time, indeed days, with nails in your tires as long as the fit is snug and the speeds low. I have never used the Slime product on anything larger than a riding lawn mower but I WOULD use it if I were headed into the devistated areas after a hurricane hit.
Good luck to all of you guys down there, I hope that you, your families and your trucks made it alright. Those of us up in the Panhandle are with you. Look out for Ivan, I can't believe all the storms this year. Take care and stay safe....
We just got power and cable back this afternoon. Lost a bunch of tree parts, overflowed the pool and totally covered the yard and house in tree debris. Otherwise all is well. We were 100 miles north of the storm track too! Can't imagine what a straight hit would do to Ocala. Trees are down on powerlines everywhere around here. 150,000 without power in Marion Co. alone. That is a much higher percentage than anyone thought would happen given the storm track distance from us. I hope all who were more in the path faired OK. It's 7 pm and it's STILL raining!
AND Ivan is on the way!
Hey bobcatv8 , our power just came back on too , lot of tree branches and a couple of trees down but other than that we made it through ok I hope the rest of ya faired as well
