I have got dogs from the pound and they charge $75 here, but that includes the shots and spay or neutering. Cats are $65 and they get the same. You also need to take this into consideration. It is a taxable deduction, because they are a non-profit organization and if it is a "donation", then it can be classified as a deduction.
Id be more than happy to donate money to the humane society for an animal. Ive watched animal cops many times, and see some of the stuff they have to do to those animals to keep them alive. Even if the 50 wasnt going on your cat, it will go on a needy animal. My lab is 6 months, and I had her spayed....My little part in controlling the pet population
My wife and I have bought a couple cats from the humane society. I believe it costs arund $75 (Canadian) and that includes all the shots and first check up at the vet. You also get the animal spayed or neutered for "free". Sounds like a heck of a deal to me!
You think if you offered them $5 they would let you have it, probably costs more to put them to sleep????
Don't take this the wrong way, but if someone can't come up with more than five dollars to adopt a pet, they probably shouldn't have a pet. That's why there's so many unwanted animals "roaming" the streets. People don't think about the lifelong financial burden of an animal so when things get rough, they abandon them or take them to the shelter. Asking for $60-$75 at least assures someones halfway serious about owning the pet and helps cover some of the costs of running the shelter. I've adopted 3 dogs from shelters and all 3 have been great pets.
I got a cat from the local chapter....the fee to adopt was only $25.00...and two weeks later the man who ran it (who was also a vet) called me to tell me that the litter she was with had roundworm, and if I brought her in, he would give her the medicine for free, which he did. I always think adopting from a shelter is better than buying from a pet store...the animals are ususally healthier...
The shelter I adopted a cat from this weekend (my mom got one too and my g/f adopted two for the price of one b/c they shouldn't be seperated) charges $70. All animals are fixed and have all their shots up to date, de-wormed, feline lukemia/ AIDS tested and you get a vet checkup visit for free. I think it was a great deal considering that getting your pet fixed will cost at least $100. If you want a cheap pet you can probaby get them free (but there will be hidden costs) but if you want a great pet and to do a good thing, go to the humane society. I always donate old blankets and towels to the shelter to use a bedding too. My g/f thought about taking one of her uncle's barn kittens for free but she got an estimate from the vet for over $200 for all shots, de-worming and fixing the kitten. The shelter is packed with cats and dogs with the surrender comments of "cost too much" and "couldn't afford to take care of". People who think pets are free are a huge source of unwanted and abandoned animals, don't be ignorant, a healthy pet is a happy pet and it is your responsibility to ensure the pet's health IMHO. I agree that anyone who can't swing the adoption fee or is unwilling to pay it should think twice about having a pet.
Try Sioux Falls, there they keep a record of you, how many pets have you had, were did they go and why. Then they make you wait while they check you out before you can 'adopt' a pet. You also have to have them neutered or spayed or they will come and take you pet from you.
The animal shelter here is run by the County Animal Control. It is awfully overcrowded and very unsanitary. I worked with the county 3 years ago and I was sent there for a day because they needed an extra hand. Come to find out--they needed help with the gas chamber, which they gave me the responisibility of running for that day. They put them in a box that looks like a big deep freezer but opens from the front, and then seal it, and pump CO2 in to it, so they gradually "go to sleep" but the ones that do know what's going on, they will whine and whine until there is no more oxygen in the chamber.
i volunteer at the local humane society and they have some of the COOLEST dogs and cats there. our "fee" is 80-110 $ and yes that includes spay and neuter shots and any meds they may need.
unfortunately we cannot get our next dog at a shelter due to our neighbors dogs ( new house) they have some pretty territorial dogs and we just don't want to stir a pot that we don't have to. we are keeping our eye our at the shelter though.BTW they only ask for 6 hours a month so if any of you can give a little time.... well ya know had to put the old plug in!
great people, great pets and a great cause.
