trailer wiring

I have a 1992 explorer and want to wire it for trailer lights. I hear a wiring harness is close to the rear bumper. Has anyone tried this?

That's how I've done mine, but mine has the factory tow package. I'm not sure if that harness is there on one that didn't come with the tow package. My harness is just in front of the bumper on the driver's side frame rail.

I assume it does not have the trailer towing package. If it did there should be a harness that will connect to a plug in the rear of the car and come out to a 4 wire flat plug. The other things the trailer towing package consisted of on a '92 were relays for the trailer wiring, extra transmission cooling, 3.78 (or 3.73) gears, and larger front rotors and bearings. The other simplest option is to buy a kit that connects into the brake light wiring. Some companies make a kit that has a TEE connection where you can unplug a connection in the rear that's used on the brake lights and then re-connect them through the TEE. There is a connection on the TEE for a 4 wire flat trailer light plug. I know you used to be able to get these connectors at Walmart and various auto parts stores, but it has been several years since I've gotten one of them. They work really sweet though.

i have a wiring harness by the bumper with a empty slot but i was not sure what else i need to do. Can i buy a wire that connects to the harness that has 4 flat wires on the other end?

Maybe, what does the harness look like? Do you have a way to make a picture or diagram?

If the plug by the bumper is round and is the male side (should have a cover also), then you haveto get the extension from Ford. It has the 4-pin on it. If you follow it back up under the frame, does it plug into the other wiring?

My Explorer isn't here, so I can't get a pic for you...
