Something I forgot about in my last post to ask... With the 1983 F-150 custom truck that I just purchased, it has a 351-w engine and a 4 speed trans. What I would like to know is what kind of trans is it? Like I said, it is a 4 speed and it definately has a granny gear. Second and third seem to be the main driving gears and 4th almost seems like it is an overdrive. Any ideas? Also what is so significant about an F-150 "CUSTOM". Was that the best trim package or something?
From what I have read in the last 2 days it looks like either a new process 435 or a Borg Warner T-18. You should be able to check by holding a magnet to the shift tower on the tranny if it sticks that means that it is a T-18, if it doesn't then it is a NP 435.
I might be wrong so someone please correct me if I am, but I think those are the 2 most common trannys for the 351w that have the granny gear.
