No fear, this is not which one is best....instead was having issues with my 99 ranger. Had put in a superchip last year, wrked well until about 2 weeks ago, started chugging at differnet points to work, check engine light. The fuel filter was replaced..problem disappeared for a few days...then happened on the way to work again... Took it to a shop again, was told that I needed a new ECU...ok 300 to replace. They said that the chip caused it....I don't think a chip would cause problems a year later...am i wrong? Thanks in advance for any help or ideas
Just learned this one today! Okay, when you put a chip in, it causes a code 511 (on my ranger, may be a different code on yours). This code is "read only memory test failed" I was kinda worried about it until i asked the question in the chip forum. I was told that this is normal for a chip to do because it is taking place of the read only memeory. In my haynes manual, it says to diagnose this code by "replacing the PCM" i wonder if the shop didnt read your codes, and then look at their code book, and see where it says "read only memory test failed...replace PCM" and though, well, the chip must have wrecked his computer. When really it doesnt have anything to do with the chip at all. Just some food for thought. I'd try and figure out what codes they pulled from your computer. Your code for a ROM failure shoud be PO605. Hope this helps some!
This is one of the reasons why we say to either pull a chip, or if you have a Diablo switch chip (or a Superchips Custom switch chip) to put it in stock mode. Otherwise you'll get a false code indicating a bad computer and they may replace a computer that doesn't need replacing!
