460 Heads Question

OK i'm now building a 460 , to put in what i do not know yet, its gona be a mild build, but here's the Question, its a 78' motor, and I'm wondering if there's a diffrence in Performance wise if i go to some earlier heads? I am perty sure of the awnser but considering I'm mostly an FE guy I figured i would ask , I do like the fact that parts are easier to find and much cheaper for the 385 series and I am enjoying the build so far.....I like both motor's now..so if i 'm lookin at a cam, intake, carb, headers (not sure what else) should i go for some earlier heads??? (i could get some perty easy)thanks

I guess its really how far you are going to take it. A well worked set of D3 heads will flow almost as well as the earlier D0VE's. You will have more options of getting the comp ratio you want also. But if you are going 10.5 or higher I would go with the earlier heads.

what about some DIVE's freshly rebuilt?? I dont know that i'll be going 10.5++ because i wanna try and run this on pump gas even if i do put it in a tiny car to run down the track..if i keep the 78's heads i'll keep them stock they are in good shape I dont think i would even rebuild them....

D1VE are basically D0VE's. The only bad head is the D2VE. If you go with this head you will need to run a dished piston. A KB138 with a 22cc dish will be about 10 to 1. Its a D-shape piston so it has good quench. One key to help avoid detination is to run a tight quench, meaning 0 deck the block.
