I have an 87 4x4, with a 2.9 at, and im have some troubles. I just finished replacing the valve cover and upper intake gaskets, distributer cap, rotary button, wires and plugs. when i put it all back together i have no power. it idles wildly between 600 and 1800 rpm. when i put it into gear it tries to die. when i drive it loses and gains power.
i know it could be a million of things; i just want to know if anyone has experienced anything similar.
Three places to start:
1) Especially on an '87 that doesn't have a check engine light, it's important to run the EEC-IV self-tests to see if the problem is in the EEC-IV system.
2) When you did the distributor cap and other stuff, did you get the base timing set properly (10 BTDC with SPOUT unplugged)? Is the timing advancing properly (part of KOER test with SPOUT plugged in)?
3) With all those gaskets replaced (especially the intake gaskets), did they all seal? Any other vacuum leaks?
