It's when diesel fuel makes its way into the oil from incomplete combustion. This is only a problem if you are idling the engine when it's not warm enough. This is the main reason not to idle your diesel for extended periods of time without an auxiliary idle controller. If it's warm outside don't worry about it, but in the winter idling a diesel to "warm up" is not a good idea unless you raise the RPM.
